What’s the Difference Between Pool and Bumper Pool?

EZ Billiards Explains the Pros, the Fun, and Which One Might Be Right for You

When people think of billiards, they usually picture a classic 8-foot pool table with green felt and 15 balls. But there’s another game that’s gaining popularity, especially in smaller spaces and home game rooms: bumper pool.

So what’s the difference? Is bumper pool a "mini" version of regular pool? Is it just for kids? Let’s break it down and help you decide which setup is best for your space and style.

 1. The Table Layout

Traditional Pool Table:

  • Larger (7 to 9 feet long)

  • Rectangular with 6 pockets (4 corners + 2 side)

  • Open surface with no obstacles

  • Standard for 8-ball, 9-ball, straight pool, etc.

  • Bumper Pool Table:

  • Smaller (typically 4 to 5 feet long)

  • Usually octagonal or rectangular with only 2 pockets (one at each end)

  • Features bumpers (small cushioned posts) in the center of the table that block straight shots and add challenge

  • Played with just 10 balls (5 red, 5 white, plus a cue ball)

 2. How the Games Are Played

Pool (8-ball or 9-ball):

  • Played with 15 numbered balls and a cue ball

  • The objective is to sink all your balls (solids or stripes) and then the 8-ball

  • Focuses on angles, cue control, and shot planning

Bumper Pool:

  • Quicker-paced

  • Players each have 5 balls and must bank or angle shots around bumpers to sink them into the pocket on the opposite side

  • The game is over once one player sinks all their balls (bonus if you sink your marked ball first!)

  • Ideal for casual, competitive family play or tight spaces

 3. Skill Level and Strategy

  • Pool allows for deep strategy, combo shots, and complex angles great for more serious players or anyone who enjoys a mental challenge.

  • Bumper Pool is more accessible, less intimidating, and just plain fun. It still requires precision, but is faster to learn and easier for all ages.

At EZ Billiards, we love both and we’ll help you find the right table based on how you play.

 4. Space & Setup

Traditional pool tables require at least 13’x16’ of space for comfortable cue movement. Bumper pool tables can fit in smaller rooms, apartments, rec areas, or offices, typically 8’x10’ is enough.

If space is limited, bumper pool might be the better option and we offer delivery, setup, and custom cloth options for both.
